The Build Story

Building a Network of Niche Digital Publications

The Publisher Network started with a simple observation: local and niche digital publications are underserved. Big media companies ignore small geographic or interest-based audiences because the numbers don't justify their overhead. But with modern tooling and shared infrastructure, you can run these publications profitably at a fraction of the traditional cost.

The Portfolio

The network includes publications like OnlyMayfair, The Surrey, and several other titles — each targeting a specific geographic audience in the UK. Every publication has its own brand, editorial voice, and audience, but they all share the same technical backbone.

Shared Infrastructure, Lower Costs

This is where the model gets interesting. Every publication runs on the same stack:

  • Next.js for the frontend — fast, SEO-optimised, easy to template
  • Supabase for the backend — shared database infrastructure with logical separation per publication
  • AI-assisted content generation — Claude helps with research, drafts, and content ideation at scale

When I launch a new publication, the marginal cost is minimal. The CMS, analytics, ad integration, and deployment pipeline are already built. I'm essentially just creating a new brand skin and starting to publish content.

Monetisation Strategy

Revenue comes from three streams:

  • Display advertising — programmatic ads via premium networks
  • Sponsored content — local businesses paying for featured articles and brand partnerships
  • Affiliate marketing — curated recommendations for restaurants, experiences, and local services

The sponsored content stream is the most valuable per-article, but display ads provide the base layer of passive revenue that makes the whole model work.

AI Content at Scale

I use AI as a force multiplier, not a replacement for quality. Every article starts with AI-assisted research and drafting, then gets edited and enhanced with local knowledge, original photography where possible, and genuine editorial judgement. The goal is to publish 10x more content than a traditional publication could afford, while maintaining a quality bar that readers and advertisers trust.

What Makes This Work

The key insight is that niche publications with commercial intent attract high-value audiences. Someone reading about the best restaurants in Mayfair or property developments in Surrey is a valuable reader for advertisers. CPMs are significantly higher than general interest content.

Lessons Learned

  1. 01

Shared infrastructure is the unlock — the marginal cost of launching a new publication drops to nearly zero when the tech stack is reusable.

  2. 02

AI content generation works best as a force multiplier with human editorial oversight, not as a full replacement for quality journalism.

  3. 03

Choose niches where the audience has commercial intent — high-value readers attract high-value advertisers and better CPMs.
